You can fill your complete bookshelf with tactics problems. The most for your $s gives you Lazlo Polgar's brick. Title is 5000 soemthing tactics problems or so, simply google polgar and tactics! If you are looking for a real classic, go for Reinfeld's 1001 Combinations and Sacrifices.

I agree with Mike's suggestions.

I do not know the "Polgar brick" myself, but read that it contains problems with a wide range of difficulty. Supposedly it starts with many "move and checkmate in one" problems, which is great for beginners - I believe that it is essential to know the basic checkmate pattern by heart, not only to checkmate your opponents but also to avoid falling into those cheap traps!

Fred Reinfeld's "1001 Combinations and Sacrifices" is a nice collection of mostly medium-complex tactics sorted by theme (pin, fork, etc.). I just started doing some of the problems in this book and find them challenging at my level (around 1300 std at ICC).

In any case, I'd suggest to look for something with a decent number of problems to learn common pattern.

Welcome!

I forgot to mention that you can download the programs from Reinfeld's book "1001 Cominations and Sacrifices" from the Chessville downloads page (I assume that you have some Internet access )

Thanks for tip with the download. The problems by Reinfeld are very difficult for me. Is there somewhat simpler problems for beginners? I must check the answer for all problems because I cannot solve them myself.

Yes, i am struggling to solve the problems in Reinfeld's book, too. If you are looking for easy problems, take a look at John Coffey's site. I did the one move tactics problems there more than 8 times over a while ago. I don't know a book with simple problems, though. It seems that most authors want to impress potential book buyers with cool combinations.
