scid or chessbase? 2008/02/25 08:35 Karma: 1
Howdy! I saw scid mentioned here, is it any good? Was thinking about buying chessbase but why spend money when scid is free?

Hi there!
I don't know much about chessbase, in fact I never tried it myself. ALl I can say about it is that it seems to be pretty popular.

The answer if SCID is any good depends of course on what you want to do with it. For me, SCID has pretty much all the features I need. I played a bit with Chess Assistant in the past but came back to SCID. It looks less fancy but is in my opinion easier to use and faster.

Anyway, it is free! Why not giving it a try? I'd say just try SCID and use it for a while, and if you are missing features, go and spend some money if you have to.

Hi,

I also started using SCID, but it stopped its updates on 2004.

Another guy got the source and has continued its updates and now its called ChessDB, also free and with a lot of functionalities!

http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/

Sciurus,

When you speak about SCID, are you speaking about the original or the current version ChessDB?

Regards.

RoostH:

I used both the original version and the one at

http://prolinux.free.fr/scid/

The main features, at least the ones I use on a daily basis, are the same for both versions. I chose this branch over the one you mentioned for some minor reason not important enough to remember.

Unfortunately, the developers responsible for the version cited above and ChessDB mentioned by you seem to hate each other. You can find the argument with a quick search if you are curious. Too bad, would be nice to coordinate the efforts, but well...

I've checked the url you placed, and seems this scid version has some more feature than ChessDB.

I'm going to use it for a while also, so I'll verify it. The original scid page in sourceforge had an older version and that's why I preferred ChessDB.

Thanks
