2007 World Chess Championship live coverage 2007/09/13 10:35 Karma: 2
The official site seems to offer not much. In fact, just hours before round one starts I am unable to find even the most basic info on the site such as pairings.

Anyway, as a pleasant surprise, Chessdom.com just announced live coverage at their site, with commentary by IM Kalin Karakeyahov, IM Miodrag Perunovic, GM Vladimir Dimitrov and possibly more to come. And best of all, it seems to be free.

Besides that, the usual suspects such as ICC and Playchess.de offer GM audio commentary for paying subscribers. If you are not a member of any of these sites, playchess might be a good option because they are selling 12hour passes for a reasonable price.

Just as a quick update: Now that the games started I can confirm that the coverage at Chessdom is free. Even better, I really like it. IM Miodrag Perunovic covers two games live and writes a some comments every few moves. To me, reading through some comments is easier to follow than audio commentary - after all, who can listen to GMs talking about intricate chess positions for hours and once something interesting comes up, live audio does not allow you to skip back to understand what is happening.

It is not live, but each day a 15min video can be watched at ICC over the game of the day with grandmaster comment. Here is GM Christiansen on round one: http://webcast.chessclub.com/Mexico07/GOTD/Round1/Christiansen.html

Yes, the official side is disappointing!

Thanks for the tip with the game of the day chess videos at ICC - at least the first one is great!

Regarding the official site - it seems they had some technical problems, see for instance The Daily Dirt chess blog. However, I agree with Mig Greengard that technical problems are no excuse for non-existing content.

Anyway, the official site also provides live chess game relays, which are actually working right now I still prefer the live coverage at chessdom.com because of the commentary.

My favorite multimedia coverage of the 2007 chess world championship so far is the one at ICC (the free parts are not live, though). They provide free, coffee-break length, video commentary on the game of the day and a video with interviews and snippets from the press conference. In addition, there is a daily podcast by Mig Greengard.

For photos and written post-mortem game analysis, however, Chessbase seems to provide the best info.

On a side note: I am astonished how many websites claim to provide full coverage of the event but do not even bother to put up a table with the current standings. Do they really expect that I read through all articles and then add up the points myself to find out who is leading?
