This is one of the games I played on ChessWorld lately. Just like myself 2 years ago, my opponent just started playing there and asked me for a few comments on out game.

1.d4 d5 2.e3 c5 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.c3 Nf6 5.Bd3 Bg4 6.O-O e6 7.h3 Bh5 8.Na3?!

The Knight is better placed closer to the center at d2 where it controls e4 and c4 than at the rim of the board.

8...Be7 9.Bd2 O-O 10.c4?

This move loses a pawn. It is better to unpin the knight at f3 by developing the Q first.

10...cxd4 11.exd4 Nxd4 12.Nxd4??

Probably overlooked the pin by the bishop. I used to make moves like this quite regularly myself.

12...Bxd1 13.Raxd1 Bxa3

Black has now a material advantage. In this situation, exchanging pieces is good for Black because it makes his advantage more powerful.

14.bxa3 dxc4 15.Bc2?

White's knight is lost. It would have been better to play Nxe6 forcing ...fxe6. After Bxc4, White would still have lost a knight but at least got 2 of Black's pawns in return.

15...Qc7?

For some reason, I thought capturing the hanging knight with the Q was dangerous. Guess I was seeing ghosts.

16.Nb5 Qc5 17.a4 Nd5

From the center square d5, the knight controls many squares.

18.Be3?

The B looks protected here but after the exchange, the recapturing pawn is lost.

18...Nxe3 19.fxe3 Qxe3+ 20.Kh1 Rfd8 21.Rde1 Qg3

I moved the Q here because it restricts the mobility of the White king. In general, it is dangerous for the king to have the enemy's Q close by.

22.Rd1?

Allowing Black to exchange rooks. A rule of thumb is to avoid exchanges if you are behind.

22...Rxd1 23.Rxd1 g5?

I missed a chance here. After ...a6 White's knight has no safe square to go to.

24.Nd6

A good move on first sight - at least I missed the proper response of ...Rd8.

24...b6? 25.Nf5?? exf5 26.Bxf5 Re8 27.Rf1?

Allows a small combination forcing the exchange of the rooks and with it the upcoming fork.

27...Re1 28.Rxe1 Qxe1+ 29.Kh2 Qe5+ 30.g3 0-1
