Play chess on your mp3 player! PDF Print E-mail

ImageThose of you who not only like chess but also music probably own some kind of mp3 player. In fact, many people seem to carry these little boxes around all the time. So, why not using them to play chess while listening to your favorite tracks on the commuter train or just lying under a tree in the park? Rockbox is an open source software project providing an alternative to the software that comes preinstalled with several mp3 players, including the ubiquitous ipod. Incidentally, Rockbox also provides a plugin called Chessbox that lets you play chess against your music player! The plugin is based on an older version of GNU chess. Its playing strength and speed is certainly not as high as an up-to-date version on a modern PC. Nevertheless, installing Rockbox and Chessbox on her/his mp3 player might be the solution for the gadget-loving chess addict.

How do you upload and get chess onto, say- a video ipod?

Hi konk,

you will have to install Rockbox on the iPod. However, that means that you will also have to use Rockbox for listening to music etc. I use it since about 1.5 years and I really like it. But then I do not have an iPod.

See http://rockbox.org for details on how to install/use it.

Rockbox has a dual boot feature (as well as the ability to auto-update its database to keep up with iTunes inserted files). So, if you want to use rockbox just to play games, thats fine. With a couple of key presses, you are back in normal iPod mode.

Moe:

Thanks for mentioning that. The possibility to choose between both the native firmware and Rockbox during system start is a very important feature, particularly to people who just want to give Rockbox a try.

Rockbox is open source software and can be modified by anyone who would like to do it. There is a plugin system for Rockbox that is used to implement games etc. Take a look at the Rockbox website for more info.
