From the web: two free chess movies PDF Print E-mail

Movie websites such as YouTube enable the average Internet user to distribute films to a world-wide audience. Among the many movies labeled with "chess" in one way or the other, I found two notable contributions (Of course there are probably more than just 2 good chess movies on the Internet. The vast majority of films, however, only comes up during searches for chess-related keywords because our favorite game is so widely used as metaphor).

Scene from the movie
The first movie of interest for chess players is Chess Fever (Shakhmatnaya goryachka), a russian movie from 1925. Unfortunately, Google does not allow to embed the video on web sites, so please follow this link to watch it. Partially made at the Moscow 1925 international chess tournament, the movie features chess masters such as José Raúl Capablanca, Ernst Grunfeld, Frank Marshall, Richard Reti, Rudolph Spielmann, Carlos Torre, and Frederick Yates, all playing themselves. But not only the "actors" may be familiar to many chess players: the movie is about a young man becoming obsessed with playing chess and his fancée, who feels more and more neglected (does this sound somehow familiar?). A real gem for the chess fan and because it is a silent movie you may even be allowed to show it in your chess club.

The second movie is an animated short called Chess 1998 (clicking on the ">" button will start playback). The movie is about "two young pawns falling in love" and them being of different color ensures some drama. The movie vaguely resembles a ballet - no spoken words, just animated chess pieces moving to music. Enjoy!
