Rotlewi vs. Rubinstein Lodz 1907: Rubinstein's immortal game PDF Print E-mail

I start to enjoy the games played by the old chess masters more and more. Among my favorites is Akiba Rubinstein (1882-1961) who was one of the strongest chess players at the beginning of the 20th century. Recently, I treated myself to a copy of "Rubinstein's Chess Masterpieces: 100 Selected Games" and "discovered" this gem. Of course, I cannot really claim that I "discovered" a game that is considered by Hans Kmoch as "Rubinstein's immortal game" and Irving Chernev characterized with the words "The great artist of the endgame displays his virtuosity in yet another field. He unleashes an attack with the fire and elegance of a Morphy, and unfolds combinations and brilliant sacrifices that would do honour to Tal or Alekhine." Nevertheless, I enjoyed this game very much and hope that you will enjoy it, too. I annotated most of the moves, except for the opening which is a Tarrasch Defense of the Queen's gambit, albeit with an unusual move order. I hope that annotating some of these century old chess games will help me to improve my understanding of chess strategy.

Game from: "Rubinstein's Chess Masterpieces: 100 Selected Games". Although most sources put this game into the year 1907, Hans Kmoch writes that it may also have been played in 1908.
