This game shows once more that 1.) it is important to study endgames and 2.) that one should base the evaluation of a position not on the previous position but on the current one! Here I am playing a 30 10 game at the Internet Chess Club (ICC) against uberman, who is moving like in a blitz game - good for me because he would have probably crushed me of he would have taken some time to think. I left some ICC timestamps showing the time left on the clock in the comments. At the end, I had only a few minutes left, while my opponent had more time on the clock than at the start of the game thanks to the 10 second increment.

Anyway, here is the game with a blocked center and me giving away a won endgame: I was sure that the game is drawn at move 53 and offered a draw. Uberman declined but we agreed to a draw later, after he made a blunder... If I would have spend some time looking at the board instead of accepting the draw right away based on my previous evaluation, I may have been able to win the game...

yea, i think you could have gone a5 and worked your way in to get the d pawn. he would have been blocked out, and even if he got the opposition after the capture you could have gone over and got the other two pawns and eventually promoted one of yours. at least i think so.

I think so, too, but may be it would be instructive to play this out against a computer. Too bad that the number of pieces on the board is too high to simply evaluate the positionusing the endgame tablebases.

Most of the time I am using Shredder's online endgame database at http://shredderchess.com/onlin...base.html. Very convenient to use, it is for free, and does not require any installation (java-based web interface). Check it out!

Just tried it. That is cool. Too bad it doesn't have even more positions!
